A proposed trench may cross electric, gas, water, sewer, communications, irrigation or other buried systems. A paint mark alone does not define the final crossing. The project needs current records, locate responses, private-line information, design elevations and a controlled method for establishing exact conditions before production excavation reaches the conflict.

Put the proposed and existing systems on one plan

Show the new utility route, depth, structures and connection points together with available record information for existing lines. Identify which information is surveyed, located, inferred or unverified. Do not convert a schematic utility map into a promised field depth.

Complete public and private locating coordination

Texas811 notifies participating facility operators. Private irrigation, lighting, service lines and other non-member facilities may need a separate locator or responsible owner. Check positive responses and resolve unclear or incomplete markings before excavation proceeds.

OSHA requires estimated underground-installation locations to be determined before excavation and exact locations to be established by safe and acceptable means as work approaches them. The employer and competent person control field safety; property owners should stay out of the work zone.

Define the exposure and crossing hold point

State who exposes or verifies the existing utility, who confirms elevation and condition, and who authorizes the new work to continue. The method should be chosen by the responsible contractor for the facility, soil, access and tolerance. This article does not direct hazardous hand digging, vacuum excavation or equipment operation.

  • Record the locate request and responses.
  • Identify private facilities separately.
  • Mark the crossing and controlled work limits.
  • Assign the verification hold point.
  • Document protection, support and inspection responsibilities.

Coordinate design clearances and protection

The responsible designer and facility owners should determine separation, support, encasement, bedding or other project-specific requirements. Locally adopted codes, utility standards and permit conditions can differ. Do not rely on a generic clearance number from a blog.

Plan documentation before backfill

Photograph the verified crossing when permitted, record measured information and obtain required inspection or trade approval before covering it. Ask who restores markings if work pauses. Coordinate Iron Earth’s underground-utility excavation services through the project assessment process.

Utility crossing questions

Does an 811 ticket locate every private line?

No. Participating facility operators respond through the system; private or non-member lines can require separate action.

Can paint marks prove utility depth?

No. Field verification and project-specific records are needed as the work approaches the facility.

Who approves the crossing?

That depends on the utility owners, responsible trades, designer, inspector and locally adopted requirements. Name them in the scope.

What helps with an estimate?

Send plans, utility records, locate information, access photos, proposed elevations and the inspection sequence.
