Asphalt driveway removal should define more than the visible black surface. The pavement, aggregate base, soft subgrade, edges, utility conflicts and replacement plan all affect the demolition scope. Before equipment arrives, mark what is removed, what stays and the elevation the next contractor expects.
Separate pavement removal from base removal
State whether the work includes asphalt only, asphalt plus aggregate base, or removal to a surveyed subgrade elevation. Existing thickness can vary across the driveway, and appearance at one edge does not prove the condition everywhere. Ask how unexpected buried concrete, reinforced sections or contaminated material will be handled.
Protect the house, street and features that remain
Mark garage slabs, sidewalks, curbs, drainage inlets, gates, landscaping and neighboring pavement. Identify the saw-cut or break line and who approves it before demolition. If the driveway connects to a public street or right-of-way, confirm any jurisdiction requirements for access, traffic control or restoration.
The next use controls the finish.
A temporary gravel route, new asphalt, concrete replacement and landscaped area need different excavation depths, base preparation and drainage details.
Coordinate utilities and dust controls
Request Texas811 coordination and identify private irrigation, lighting, electric, drainage and other owner-controlled systems separately. Pavement cutting or breaking can create dust and flying debris. OSHA’s construction silica standard applies when employee exposure to respirable crystalline silica is involved; the employer selects controls, protective equipment and work practices for the actual method.
- Mark exact demolition limits.
- Define pavement and base quantities separately.
- Identify staging, truck access and disposal.
- Protect drainage and remaining surfaces.
- Set the required final elevation and tolerance.
Write disposal and closeout into the quote
Ask whether loading, trucking, disposal fees, sweeping and final cleanup are included. Define whether reusable aggregate is kept on site and who approves reuse. Photograph the prepared area and verify the handoff elevation before replacement work begins.

Asphalt driveway removal questions
Does removal include the aggregate base?
Only if the written scope says so. Pavement, base, unsuitable soil and imported material should be identified separately.
Can the driveway remain usable during work?
Access depends on the route, equipment, demolition sequence and replacement plan. Define parking and emergency access before mobilization.
Who confirms the final grade?
Name the responsible contractor, designer or owner representative in the scope and verify before the next phase.
What helps with an estimate?
Send dimensions, photos, access measurements, known pavement details, utility information and the intended replacement.
